These flowers are just passing their prime. When the flowers die, Rich "dead heads" them so that the next year's flowers come in correctly. If you do not dead head the flowers, stems will grow up through the flowers which spoils the presentation (that might not be 100% right - for any possible plant experts reading this - as if a lot of plant experts are going to be reading this - right, as if anyone is going to read this, why do I try? what's the point? Anyway, on with the tour...).
